Meralco emerged victorious in a nail-biting match against Magnolia, securing a thrilling 99-94 win in the opening game of PBA Season 49 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Bolts, with their 1-0 record, took an early lead in Group A, while the Hotshots fell to 0-1.
Meralco's import, Allen Durham, played a pivotal role in the victory. Despite a slow start, he turned the tide by scoring 12 crucial points in the third quarter, helping Meralco build a commanding 74-63 lead. However, Magnolia's import, Glenn Robinson III, hit a clutch three-pointer to narrow the gap to just two points, 96-94, with only 19.2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Chris Newsome missed a critical four-point shot, giving Magnolia a chance to tie or take the lead. But Mark Barroca's foul on Durham sealed the victory for Meralco, as the three-time Best Import sank two free throws to extend the lead to a more comfortable 99-94.
Durham, despite a 1-of-6 shooting performance in the first half, finished as Meralco's top scorer with 20 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, and one steal. His performance was even more impressive considering Meralco's depleted roster, with key players Raymond Almazan and Allein Maliksi missing from the lineup.
Banchero, who made history as the first player to make a four-point shot, contributed 14 points, while Newsome and Jolo Mendoza each added 13 markers.
For Magnolia, Robinson III led the team with a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds. Ian Sangalang and Paul Lee also played significant roles, posting 17 and 14 points, respectively.
This victory marks a strong start for Meralco in PBA Season 49, as they aim to defend their Philippine Cup title.
