Ukraine reported on Sunday that it had successfully struck a second bridge in the Kursk region, aiming to disrupt Moscow's supply routes as Kyiv's operations on Russian soil entered their second week. Meanwhile, Russia intensified its efforts in eastern Ukraine, claiming to have captured another village just a few kilometers from the Ukrainian-held logistics hub of Pokrovsk.
Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk shared an aerial video on Telegram, showcasing a blast tearing through a bridge near the Russian town of Zvannoye. He emphasized that the Air Force continues to deprive the enemy of logistical capabilities through precision air strikes.
The timing of the attack remains unclear, as Oleshchuk did not provide a specific date. However, Russian military bloggers shared photos of the destruction, which appeared to be from the same bridge, dated Saturday.
Kyiv's military operations began on August 6, when troops and armored vehicles crossed the border in the largest attack on Russian territory since the Kremlin launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On Friday, Ukraine announced another strike in the neighboring town of Glushkovo.
The attacks on both bridges, located on the river Seym that flows through Kursk, have significantly limited Russia's options for crossing the river in the area, according to Russian military bloggers. Moscow acknowledged that the destruction of one of the bridges had hindered evacuation efforts.
The Russian defense ministry stated in a briefing that it was pushing back against Ukraine's forces near several villages. More than 120,000 people have fled the region since the fighting began, according to Russian authorities.
Russia's defense ministry claimed on Sunday that its forces had captured Svyrydonivka, a frontline settlement approximately 15 kilometers (nine miles) from Pokrovsk. Pokrovsk is situated at the intersection of a key road that supplies Ukrainian troops and towns across the eastern front, making it a long-standing target for the Russian army.
Russian forces have been gradually advancing towards Pokrovsk for months, capturing a series of small villages as they approach the city's outskirts. The head of Pokrovsk's military administration, Sergiy Dobryak, warned earlier this week that Russia was less than 10 kilometers from the city's outskirts and urged residents to evacuate.
Ukrainian forces announced on Sunday that they had thwarted a Russian missile attack on the capital Kyiv, where air raid sirens sounded before dawn. The Kyiv City Military Administration posted on Telegram that this was the third ballistic missile attack on the capital in August, with a clear interval of six days between each attack. No damage or casualties were reported, and the administration stated that the attack likely involved "North Korean ballistic missiles of the KN-23 type."
Ukrainian drones attacked an oil storage facility in Russia's southern Rostov region early Sunday morning, sparking a large fire, according to the local governor. Videos on social media showed thick black smoke and bursts of flames coming from the site of the blaze, which the governor said was in the town of Proletarsk.
"In the southeast of the Rostov region, air defenses repelled a drone attack. As a result of falling debris on the territory of industrial storage facilities in Proletarsk, a diesel fuel fire broke out," Governor Vasily Golubev said on Telegram. He added that firefighting at the industrial facility was suspended due to a second drone attack, but resumed shortly after. No one was injured.
A source in Ukraine's intelligence services said the installations were part of Russia's "military-industrial complex." Proletarsk is approximately 250 kilometers from the Ukraine border and around 350 kilometers from Kyiv-held areas of fighting on the eastern Ukrainian front line.
Kyiv has repeatedly targeted oil and gas facilities in Russia since the conflict began, some hundreds of kilometers from its borders, in what it has called "fair" retaliation for attacks on its energy infrastructure. Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy praised his forces for hitting oil facilities in Russia, stating that the attacks would help bring a "just end" to the conflict.
In other news, Ukrainian authorities in the region of Donetsk reported that four civilians were killed and as many injured by Russian air strikes. Additionally, a drone attack on a car in Ukrainian-controlled parts of Kherson injured five people, according to local investigators.
