Over 5,000 cases of dengue have been recorded in Bukidnon from January to August 2024, marking a significant increase compared to the 4,000 cases reported during the same period in 2023. According to the Provincial Health Office (PHO), this rise in cases has resulted in at least 17 fatalities. Despite the alarming numbers, the PHO has not declared an outbreak, nor have local authorities discussed the possibility of declaring a state of calamity.
Malaybalay City has been the most affected, with 926 cases reported, followed by Valencia City with 508 cases. Both cities have recorded two deaths each due to dengue. In response to the escalating situation, the local government of Malaybalay City has implemented fogging operations in areas with reported dengue cases. Additionally, the PHO has distributed treated mosquito nets to schools to help prevent the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Sergio Flores, the PHO Dengue Coordinator, stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and conducting fogging to curb the spread of dengue. He highlighted the necessity of not only fogging but also cleaning up to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. "If you don't clean up and just fog, the mosquitoes will just come back because they will not be eliminated from the water, so we must clean up," Flores emphasized.
Health authorities have advised the public to adopt the 5S habit to combat dengue. This includes:
- Search and Destroy: Regularly inspect and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
- Self-Protection: Use mosquito nets, repellents, and wear protective clothing.
- Seek Early Consultation: Seek medical advice at the first signs of dengue symptoms.
- Support Fogging: Cooperate with local fogging operations.
- Sustain Hydration: Maintain adequate hydration to support recovery.
By following these guidelines, the community can contribute to controlling the spread of dengue and reducing the impact of the disease on public health.
